It is probably a great achievement to one day build instruments for guitarists whom you admired in your youth. This is the fortunate fate that befell Gary
Southwell: as a teenager, he discovered the guitar through Paul Simon, John Williams, and Julian Bream, and later in life, once established as a luthier, he built
guitars for these three musicians. Gary Southwell built 14 guitars for Julian Bream over 11 years, all of which were inspired by Hauser's model, as seen here. Gary Southwell studied lutherie at
the London College of Furniture. He set up his first workshop in Nottingham in 1983. Since 2018, he has been based in the beautiful region of Northumberland. Many concert performers play his
guitars, and his website features a long list of recordings made with his instruments.
The guitar presented here showcases this luthier's talent and expertise, both in terms of the precision of the craftsmanship and the sound quality and superb musicality. The bass notes are full and deep. The treble notes are round, flexible, and colorful. The polyphonic sound is precise and well-defined. The tone is woody and expressive with a lyrical and refined musicality. A magnificent instrument that we invite you to come and discover.
