Simon Marty is one of Australia’s most renowned guitar makers. A guitar player himself and interested in lutherie, he began building guitars in 1982. His guitars, played by many concert performers, are very sought after around the world. With his background as an engineer who worked on high-tech systems, this luthier has developed a compromise between the Australian lattice construction and an innovative system that keeps a traditional bracing pattern. In this bracing, known as “radial bracing,” the bars are glued in a star shape with the center at the bridge. Since the top is thinner than that of Australian lattice-style guitars, the sound shares similarities with that of traditionally built guitars, while retaining the powerful projection, responsiveness, and sustain characteristic of lattice designs. The notes are clear, well-balanced, and reactive, offering a precise and distinct polyphonic sound. A high-performance concert guitar worth discovering for those unfamiliar with this luthier’s work.
