Michael Cadiz was born in 1983 near Baltimore. He began playing the guitar at aged eleven and continued his musical studies in Paris with Jean-Pierre Billet and in Chicago with Sergio Assad. He studied luthiery with Rick Davis in Seattle, and then in Oregon with Robert Ruck. In 2016, he set up his workshop in Graz, Austria. This guitar is a tribute to his mentor, Robert Ruck. This is what Michael writes on his certificate of authenticity : « This guitar is a tribute to the work and memory of Robert Ruck. It was built using mainy completeds parts and woods from his shop including the rosette, top, back, neck, interior blocks, harmonic bars, fan bracing stock, binding, purfling etc. I built this guitar inspired by a Ruck instrument from 1979 and the last fully braced top that I have from him. Inside the top next to the sound hole, I have written a short note stating, « Made in memory of Robert Ruck #3/30 ». This is the third of 30 such instruments. It is an honor to be able to make these guitars and I look forward to the adventure of discorering and documenting more of this work ».
In fact, this guitar is breathtaking—both in terms of its aesthetics and craftsmanship and in terms of its sound quality. The notes are rich, flexible, and colorful. The timbre and musicality it produces are wonderfully expressive. It is undoubtedly not an easy task to pay tribute to an illustrious luthier—especially when that luthier was one’s own teacher—but Michael Cadiz rise to the challenge, and there is no doubt that the master would have been proud of his student.
