Masaru Kono (Kohno later) is one of the great names in 20th century lutherie. He was born in 1926 in Mito, Japan. He began building guitars in 1948. In 1960 he went to Spain to continue learning his trade in the Spanish tradition, and worked for six months in the workshop of Arcángel Fernández. In 1967 he won the gold medal (for sound) at the Liege competition against luthiers like Fleta (Bouchet and Rodrigo were on the jury). He died in 1998. Many great guitar names have played on his guitars.
This guitar was built in the first part of its career in 1953. The notes are silky and vibrant. The tone is smooth and lyrical. A beautiful and rare instrument representing a great historical value, but also pleasant and endearing to play.
