When Santos Hernández died, his widow asked Marcelo Barbero Sr. to carry through the construction of the guitars her husband had left unfinished. Marcelo Barbero Sr. later trained Arcángel Fernández. And when Marcelo Barbero Sr. died in his turn, his widow asked Arcángel Fernández to train her son, Marcelo Barbero Jr. These three great luthiers, who remained true to the legacy of Santos Hernández, are among the major figures in the art of Spanish guitar making.

This magnificent guitar has the label “Marcelo Barbero (Hijo) para casa de Arcangel Fernandez” dated 1967, stamped and signed by Marcelo Berbaro hijo. This date corresponds to the time when Marcelo Barbero son began working in Arcangel Fernandez's workshop. This guitar has been re-varnished (very beautifully) at a time difficult to determine. The top is cedar, a wood first used in Madrid by José Ramirez two years earlier in 1965. The luthier's craftsmanship and finish are very meticulous. Although this is Marcelo Barbero Jr's debut, Arcangel Fernandez's presence is evident in the sound qualities, which are breathtakingly beautiful: the timbre is deep, woody and moving; the basses are powerful, round and full; the trebles are vibrant, lilting and highly expressive, the whole offering a lyrical, dark and moving musicality. An exceptional instrument to discover...
