Masaru Kono (Kohno later) is one of the great names in 20th century lutherie. He was born in 1926 in Mito, Japan. He began building guitars in 1948. In 1960, he went to Spain to continue learning his trade in the Spanish tradition, and worked for six months in the workshop of Arcángel Fernández. In 1967, he won the gold medal (for sound) at the Liege competition against luthiers like Friederich (Bouchet and Rodrigo were on the jury). He died in 1998. Many great guitar names have played on his guitars.
This Masaru Kohno Model 10 was built in 1973. This powerful, well-balanced instrument remains in very good condition. The cedar top gives it a warm, round timbre with a generous response. The woods are of the highest quality, and the craftsmanship is perfectly executed. A rare and exceptional instrument that bears witness to a great era, while retaining beautiful sound qualities that are still relevant today.
