Masaru Kono (Kohno later) is one of the great names in 20th century lutherie. He was born in 1926 in Mito, Japan. He began building guitars in 1948. In 1960, he went to Spain to continue learning his trade in the Spanish tradition, and worked for six months in the workshop of Arcángel Fernández. In 1967, he won the gold medal (for sound) at the Liege competition against luthiers like Friederich (Bouchet and Rodrigo were on the jury). He died in 1998. Many great guitar names have played on his guitars. This beautiful Masaru Kohno Model 10 was built in 1975. It is a responsive and homogeneous instrument. The timbre is woody and expressive. The craftsmanship is perfectly executed. An instrument that reflects a period while retaining its beautiful, contemporary sound. relevant today.
