Antoine Pappalardo was born in 1945. He began working in his father Horace's workshop at the age of 14. In 1977, he set up his workshop in Bazainville, in the Yvelines département near Paris. His passion for the study of acoustic phenomena led him to build instruments such as the one presented here. In an article on his work, Antoine Pappalardo explains his approach as follows: "(...) the strings do not attach to the bridge, they pass through it and are fixed to the end of the guitar by a tailpiece. The strings don't pull on the bridge, so there's no mechanical stress on the soundboard. I can now concentrate my efforts on the uniquely acoustic qualities of the bracing under the soundboard; whereas with the traditional system, the bracing also has to meet string tension resistance criteria (around 40kg)". Pappalardo has built 24 guitars of this model. Given this luthier's experience, the work is obviously very well executed. The sober aesthetic is in keeping with the modern construction.
Soundwise, this is a powerful, well-balanced instrument. Notes are clear, well-defined, rich in harmonics with a good sustain. A rare, original and high-performance instrument built by a luthier whose name has marked the history of French lutherie.
