Valerio Licari was born in Rome in 1981. From 1994 to 1998 he studied classical guitar with M° Arnaldo Rotella. In 2000, he entered the Faculty of Humanities at Tor Vergata University in Rome. He chose a degree in "Musical Arts and Interpretation" and studied sound analysis and synthesis. From 2000 to 2004, he specialized in the American delta-blues and ragtime repertory, while studying acoustic guitar and fingerpicking with M° Francis H. Koerber. In 2005, at the Italian Institute for Africa and the Orient, he is in charge of cataloguing and organological research of the photographic and musical instrument collections. At the same time, he began to study violin with M° Gabriele Benigni. In 2006, he obtained a degree in ethnomusicology with honors. The same year, in Cremona, Italy, he enrolled at the International School of Violin Making "Antonio Stradivari" (I.P.I.A.L.L). In 2012 he worked for six months as a guitar wood production manager at Tonewood International in Cremona. In September of the same year he left for Malaga, Spain, to do an apprenticeship with Daniele Chiesa. He then decided to move to Spain to further study the traditional methods of making classical and flamenco guitars. He finally opened his own workshop in Granada. In 2015, the Granada City Council assigned him a workshop in the Albayzin Artisanal Center, in recognition of his traditional approach to handcrafted guitar making. At the end of 2019, he decided to return to Italy and set up his own workshop in Turin. In 2021, in parallel to his activity as a luthier, he teaches lutherie at the Piedmont Academy of lutherie "San Filippo" in Turin.

The guitar presented here, made of spruce and maple, shows all the knowledge and experience acquired by this luthier. The workmanship and finishing are of extreme precision. On the sound level, the notes are clear, vibrant and rich in harmonics. The tone is woody and deep. The musical discourse is precise and of a beautiful expressiveness.
