Luigi Locatto, one of today’s great luthiers, has been making guitars for about thirty years in his workshop in Pino Torinese, near Turin (Piedmont). Like most leading luthiers, he has developed his expertise and his inspiration through his experience in restoring historical instruments by Panormo, Lacôte, Torres, Simplicio, Garcia, Hauser, Fleta…
This guitar is a Francisco Simplicio copy such as only a very talented luthier can make: reproducing this luthier’s instruments is notably challenging on account of the woodworking craftsmanship required. You only have to look at this absolutely stunning guitar to realise that Locatto is fully up to the challenge: the rosette, the purfling on the top edge, the sides and the back, with the perfect symmetry of their colours and patterns, testify to a particularly meticulous, precise and refined work.
Soundwise, all the experience and understanding that went into achieving such sound quality are conspicuous. This is a reactive, dynamic instrument, rich in colours and greatly expressive. Its timbre is very lyrical and deep. It is true to the spirit of Simplicio, and retains the charm and emotion of his musicality. However, Luigi Locatto has introduced a touch of modernity by subtly increasing its power and sound presence, without detracting from the initial project and the cultural heritage it represents.
