Lorenzo Frignani lives and works in Modena. Since 1986, he has been making guitars, violins and lutes as well as restoring antique instruments and he has won several prestigious awards for his lutherie work. In addition to his main career in instrument building, he also works as a court expert, consultant, teacher, and lecturer in the field of lutherie. He is involved in research on the use of local tone woods and has written several books on the history lutherie (see article Orfeo Magazine).
This instrument is a replica of a 1910 Manuel Ramirez guitar which was part of his personal collection. Accordingly, Lorenzo Frignani has had the privilege to listen to the vintage guitar and study it at length — and he has made the most of it. He has been incredibly successful in recreating all the characteristics of the original model, its sound as well as its beauty. This is an aesthetically exquisite instrument. Its soundboard’s marbled appearance was achieved through a chemical process (it was not stained nor dyed); this is the same method he uses for his replicas of historical violins. When it comes to reproducing an instrument’s tone, it isn’t so much a matter of copying as of achieving a perfect understanding of a period’s spirit so as to be able to recreate as faithfully as possible all the charm and beauty of the original instrument. This guitar has round and deep basses, melodious and woody trebles, with a greatly expressive timbre and musicality.
